Get to know 2019 CHA Gala Sponsors Karen and Jim Clapper!

We asked Karen and Jim Clapper to tell us a little bit about why the work CHA supports is important to them!

How did you first connect with CHA?

We’ve been involved with CHA since 2003 and we have attended the Gala each year. Having our family and friends engaged in helping with a non-profit we feel so close to is rewarding for us. Our son started out as the photographer for the Gala when he was in college. Over the years he got married, has donated to the auction, got his in-laws involved and now has two children who benefit from Children’s Minnesota. We love how our family and friends are willing to get dressed up and spend CHA Gala evenings with us!

Can you share a favorite memory from a past CHA gala?

One of my favorite CHA Galas was our “Winter Wonderland” Gala that I chaired with Shirley Schoffelman. We met with our auctioneer to talk through ideas for the Live Auction, and she strongly advised us to do a Fund-a-Need. CHA hadn’t done one and we were willing to be first. We asked Dr. Carolyn Levitt if there was a piece of equipment that MCRC needed. She shared that Dr. Frost could use a specialized camera to document retinal changes indicating traumatic brain injury. The camera was like $11,000. At the Gala Dr. Frost showed slides of his hand drawn damaged retinas. At the end of the Fund-a-Need we were thrilled we had enough money to purchase two cameras!

What are you most looking forward to for this year’s gala?

Touring the Minneapolis Event Center was very fun. It will be the third Gala venue that our family and friends will attend. We outgrew the Crowne Plaza and moving to the RiverCentre was exciting. CHA had new opportunities and challenges. It will be fun to see how MEC comes together this year.

Our “Storyland Gala” themes have often come from children’s stories like Peter Pan and last year’s Peter and Ernesto. It is the compelling stories, though, about the families we touch that are so meaningful. The common thread throughout CHA’s successful fundraising is how WE can change the story of a child and his or her family through our fundraising efforts.
